Apple joins the NFC Forum’s board of directors and a top-tier sponsorship role

Apple Pay - Wells Fargo
Up until the launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple’s focus on near field communication (NFC) technology wasn’t anywhere near the public, as it focused on its own proprietary wireless technology.
Now, though, with NFC included with the aforementioned flagship devices, and the launch of Apple Pay, the company has seen fit to join the NFC Forum in a couple of different capacities, including as a top-tier sponsor. On top of that, Apple has also joined the NFC Forum’s Board of Directors, with representation from Aon Mujtaba, a Director on Apple’s Wireless Systems Engineering team. Paula Hunter, the Director of the NFC Forum, said in the official announcement that the forum is happy to welcome Apple.
With Apple now taking major roles within the NFC Forum, the company will be able to spearhead the overall development of NFC within the industry, and make decisions that develop NFC-based technology for the future. It will be interesting to see how Apple’s role within the forum makes an impact, both broadly and just for Apple’s products.
