When the Apple Watch launched, a little while after Apple began accepting appointments for individuals to try out an Apple Watch while in a retail store, in hopes of winning them over to eventually make the purchase.
Just last week, a report indicated that Apple was gearing up to streamline its Apple Watch try-on experience, though, with a main focus on dropping the appointments, and putting “mobile” try-on stations in retail stores to get the Watch in front of more eyes. Now, based on positive feedback across the retail stores around the globe that had been trying the mobile try-on station, Apple is rolling it out to all of its stores.
It’s called the Mobile Try-On, based on information gleaned from Apple Retail employees by 9to5Mac, and Apple is actively encouraging employees to use the station to get the Apple Watch in front of more customers.
With Mobile Try-On, Apple Store employees can walk around the retail location with an Apple Watch demo unit wrapped around their wrist, and an iPhone already running the Apple Watch companion iOS app. The idea is to let the customer actually try on the Apple Watch that the Apple Store employee is wearing, which is indeed a different approach to having the Watch locked behind a glass case, or needing an appointment to test it out.
According to a memo sent out to Apple Store employees, Apple is trying to get the Apple Watch in front of Apple Store customers that may be waiting for an appointment, either at a Workshop or at the Genius Bar, or may already be checking out the Apple Watch in one of the presentation tables. On top of that, and to keep sales of the iPhone going, Apple wants the Mobile Try-On station to check in with those customers looking at iPhones, too.
Here’s the full memo sent to employees:
“Now you can give customers browsing collections at the Display Table a hands-on experience of the Apple Watch in a simple, nature way, and then navigate to the Try-On Table. Take advantage of the paired iPhone to show how they work together. In the Family Room, customers waiting for appointments can experience Apple Watch. Find out their favorite iPhone feature and show how the Watch can make it better, or show off Calendar events or text messages sent straight to their wrist.Customers looking for accessories can experience Apple Watch too. When they’re browsing Beats headphones, it’s a chance to demo how the Apple Watch Music app can control volume and select tracks. Use Siri to play artists, radio, or tracks from the Apple Music library.“
Breaking it down even further, Apple wants the Mobile Try-On station presenters to focus on five different areas: Sending an audio message within the Messages app, customizing Watch faces, using Siri to ask a friend out for a meet-up, pinging an iPhone via a Glance on the Watch’s display, and rearranging apps on the Home Screen.
Have you tried an Apple Watch through one of the try-on sessions?
