The Apple Watch does support ‘smart bands’ for health data, but that’s not slowing development of Apple Watch 2

Apple Watch data port
On August 21, a report surfaced that once again pointed to “smart bands” for theApple Watch being on the way, with the report indicating that these bands could mean Apple is not planning on a yearly refresh for the Watch proper.
Indeed, based on that report, Apple was banking on the idea that buyers would not be all that keen to upgrade their Apple Watch every year, but instead could boost sales, and attention on the current Apple Watch by releasing smart bands for the wearable. With these bands, users could gather even more health data, with the straps connecting to the hidden diagnostics port.
However, based on a report published recently by 9to5Mac, that report is note entirely true. It is true, according to the report, that the data port on the current Apple Watch would indeed allow for smart bands to be connected to it, and that those bands could very well be in the design stage. Whether or not Apple is planning on releasing them in 2016 is unknown, however.
The report says that the port was created with the idea that bands with sensors could be launched at some point down the road, and some could use Bluetooth for even more data retrieval. However, the unnamed sources speaking with the publication state that while these bands could very well be coming down the pipe, it’s not slowing down the production and design of the Apple Watch 2. Moreover, the report indicates that Apple apparently has every intention of upgrading the Apple Watch on a yearly basis.
Indeed, reports of the Apple Watch 2 surfaced in early July of this year, only a few months after the current Apple Watch initially went on sale. Those reports indicated that the new wearable could feature a FaceTime camera, boast a bigger battery, but retain the same screen size as the current generation model.
It’s certainly possible that Apple is not only working on smart bands, but also the next-generation Apple Watch. Both of those seem perfectly plausible. The question is, do Watch owners want more features/bands, or do they want a new Apple Watch?
What do you think?
