Along with Apple Music, which recently saw its streaming music count towards the Billboard charts, the company also launched Beats 1 radio. But that might not be the only station for long.
Beats 1 is the company’s global radio station, with headquarters across the globe. However, according to a new report from The Verge and citing information learned from anonymous sources, Apple’s music deals means the company could launch new Beats-branded radio stations whenever they want, as they see fit. This is based on the per-play amount that Apple pays out through Beats 1, and apparently it’s “better than Pandora,” according to the sources.
Going further into Apple Music, though, the labels are taking a “wait and see approach,” despite the report indicating that the labels are happy enough with the progress that Apple Music has made since its debut in June. The labels, however, are going to wait to jump any further into bed with Apple until the initial three-month trial period fades out, as the labels currently see all Apple Music listeners as simply “trialists,” able to jump ship at any moment due to not having any monetary link to the service just yet.
Based on this report, Apple Music is starting well enough, and the per-play payout from Beats 1 seems like it’s a good deal for artists moving forward, especially if new stations are launched down the road.
