Future iPhones might be able to detect smudged displays

Force Touch iPhone 6 and 6 Plus
Apple today filed a patent that describes a patent which prevents the iPhone from turning off the display when it is smudged.
In most modern smartphones, including iPhones, the proximity sensor can sometime get confused and accidentally turn off the screen when it is smudged by your fingerprint, thinking that the phone is close to your ear. This issue occurs very rarely — probably a few times across the lifetime of an iPhone — but that has not stopped Apple from finding a way to solve it.
smudge
Apple’s patent describes a solution where another sensor behind the display calculates the amount of light falling on the display to understand whether the obstruction is due to a smudge on the display or due to the user bringing the phone close to the display. To get around the issue, Apple is changing the pattern of the light around the sensors to solve the issue.
It is commendable to see Apple taking so much effort to fix an issue that most iPhone users likely face only a few times throughout the lifetime of the handset. It are these little things from Apple that probably make people fall head over heel in love with their products.
