Facebook is rolling out a significant redesign to user profiles on mobile, putting larger profile pictures front and center, and giving users the ability to set “profile videos” in place of pictures.
Facebook first began testing its new profile design earlier this summer, and now it’s rolling out to all. The most significant change is the ability to set a 7-second profile video, which will continue to loop at the top of your profile page.
Small groups of users in the U.S. and the U.K. will get profile videos first, The Verge reports, and of course, they are completely option; you can continue to use a static photo if you prefer.
Facebook is also providing the option to set temporary profile photos for a specified period of time, so you can set a certain image for something like a big sports event or occasion — then have it revert back to your regular profile photo automatically later on.
Facebook’s new profiles also have a bio section that supports emoji, and a new ‘About’ section that lets you specify where you live, work, and went to school (if you want to). Photos also get their own sections, giving them greater focus, and you can choose to ‘feature’ your favorites.
With these changes, Facebook is “trying to balance out the information that might be more important to people when they’re visiting profiles,” the company told The Verge. Clearly, we’re more interested in snooping at peoples’ photos than their status updates.
If you live in the U.S. or the U.K. and you’re lucky, you should see these changes soon. If not, you’ll have to wait until Facebook rolls them out to all.
