On September 22, iFixit put together what they normally do: a teardown. The device on that particular date, though, happened to be Apple’s new Apple TV, which is set to go on sale in October.
Unfortunately for iFixit, that decision led to Apple not only banning the developer account the crew used, but also getting the official iFixit app pulled from the App Store. To be specific, the iFixit app was tied to that developer account, so when Apple banned the developer account, the app was removed as a byproduct of that decision.
Interestingly enough, iFixit was aware that Apple could possibly take offense to the teardown of the new, unreleased Apple TV, and that they weighed the risks, but “blithely tossed those risks over our shoulder.” As history will show, iFixit went along with the teardown of the Apple TV and the Siri Remote, showcasing what the set-top box and accessory are made of.
As far as the app is concerned, iFixit says that there are no plans to reinstate it into the App Store, as the small team has been instead working on the mobile site for the teardown procedures documented there.
