Rumor has it that Xiaomi will adopt a force-sensitive display with features like Apple’s 3D Touch

Xiaomi, over the years, has made a name for itself for being a popular brand in China. It has also made a name for itself when it comes to copying Apple’s designs.
In July of this year, Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra even talked about those iPhone copycat claims, saying that it’s more “melodrama” than anything else, and even cites the Chinese company being a Chinese company as a reason some believe Xiaomi copies Apple. However, at the same time, he admitted that the company’s Mi 4 looked like an iPhone 5.
Now, according to a new report, based off information gathered from a well known tipster, Xiaomi is looking to copy something else pioneered by Apple. The report fromGforGames points to a future where Xiaomi has adopted force-sensitive displays for its smartphones, and that the company could be rolling out 3D Touch-like features in the future. The company’s patents now cover 3D Touch-like features, but unfortunately the tipster doesn’t have any additional information.

The future has options for Xiaomi, though. The company could develop its own software and hardware from the ground up, or, and what’s probably more likely, Xiaomi could team up with Synaptics and use that company’s “ClearForce” technology for its display hardware. This wouldn’t be the first time that Xiaomi has worked with Synaptics, so this is the running theory at this point.
This future, where other companies start adopting 3D Touch-like features, was practically foretold by Apple when they showed it off for the first time, saying this was as a pivotal addition to touchscreen as multitouch was all those years ago.
Do you think we’ll start seeing 3D Touch-like features from other companies in the months and years ahead?
