WhatsApp users with an iPhone have yet another reason to update to iOS 9.1. After installing Apple’s latest update, you’ll find added Quick Reply functionality, allowing you to reply to messages without having to open the WhatsApp app.
Quick Reply was first introduced in iOS 8, but it was only available to Apple’s own Messages app. With iOS 9, the company opened it up to all messaging apps, but WhatsApp — one of the most popular messaging platforms — was in no rush to adopt it right away.
Thankfully, WhatsApp does support Quick Reply now — but only under iOS 9.1. Users have found that updating to this release activates the feature, which isn’t available in earlier iOS releases even if you have the latest WhatsApp version installed.
If you’ve already updated to iOS 9.1, and Quick Reply isn’t working with WhatsApp yet, follow these steps to activate it:
- Ensure you have exited the WhatsApp app
- Open the multitasking UI and force close the WhatsApp app
- Reopen WhatsApp
The next time you get a WhatsApp message, you should be able to reply from the notification.
If you’re not updating to iOS 9.1 yet because you want to maintain your jailbreak, then you can use a tweak like WAQuickReply to enable the feature under earlier versions of iOS.
Apple Watch users have also found that you can now reply to WhatsApp messages from your wrist using either preset replies or by dictating a response after updating to the latest watchOS 2.0.1 software.
