The highly anticipated Plex app has been released for the new Apple TV. Plex co-founder Steve Olechowski had confirmed in September that they will be releasing Plex app for the fourth generation Apple TV.
Plex will allow users to officially stream content from their computer or network attached storage to Apple TV. Previously, you had to hack your Apple TV to use Plex on Apple’s set-top box.
Plex is already available on a wide range of platforms including iOS, and is widely considered as one of the best — if not the best — media streaming software out there. Plex enhances your media library by adding descriptions, plot summaries, posters, and album covers. Rotten Tomatoes, the movie reviews aggregator, was recently integrated into Plex for iOS as well, meaning it will be easier than ever before to see a movie or TV show’s rating.
Plex is a universal app, so you can download it for free on your Apple TV if you’ve already purchased it. Otherwise, you can download it for free, but need to pay $4.99 via In-App Purchase to enable streaming playback.
As you can see in the screenshots above, Plex for Apple TV offers a beautiful interface to organize your media such as your movie and TV collection, your music library, and all of your photos and home videos, making it one of the killer apps for Apple’s new set-top box.
