Apple is reportedly expanding its carrier billing option to yet another country, following the rollout to carrier O2 in Germany in October.
According to a report published recently by CNBC, Apple is looking to expand carrier billing in Russia, by way of an Amsterdam-based wireless carrier called VimpelCom utilizing the services offered through Beeline:
“In Russia, Apple is partnering with Beeline, the domestic unit of Amsterdam-based mobile phone company VimpelCom, according to sources with knowledge of the deal. On the payment information page within account settings, a user who chooses to pay by mobile now sees the following:“Mobile phone billing is available in Russia for Beeline mobile customers. A verification will be sent to you.”
Some Beeline subscribers have already been prompted that carrier billing is available, while others haven’t just yet.
With carrier billing offered through iTunes and the iOS App Store, customers will be able to buy digital content from their device, and then subsequently have those charges put to their wireless bill, rather than pay for them directly in the moment.
Apple is said to be using a company called Boku, which is based in San Francisco, California, to manage its carrier billing option for Germany, and is said to be utilizing the same company for the option expanding in Russia.
