Consumer Reports has been conducting its nationwide survey to rank the “Big Four” wireless carriers in the United States for five years now, and finally an upset has occurred.
According to CR’s latest survey, T-Mobile has managed to usurp Verizon Wireless from its coveted number one spot based on the survey’s results. This marks the first time since Consumer Reports has done this survey that Verizon hasn’t held the top spot, heralding its position over the other carriers.
For T-Mobile, it’s a big step in the right direction from the Magenta Carrier that, not too long ago, was the smallest of the four, even as its customer satisfaction has been relatively high over the years. In fact, T-Mobile’s shift to the top position didn’t take much, with the ranking coming in at 73, and Verizon ranking in at 70.
AT&T and Sprint had a ranking of 68 and 67, respectively. Interestingly enough, each of the Big Four ranked markedly less than regional or discount services, which includes the Number 1 Consumer Cellular, and other services like Ting, Virgin Mobile, and U.S. Cellular.
In a statement published by CNN Money from Verizon spokesperson Chuck Hamby, Verizon is committed to the best possible experience for its customers, and states that their own performance measurements come from science-based testing, not “from crowd-sourced or survey data.”
“We’ve always said that the most accurate performance measurement comes from scientific-based testing, not from crowd-sourced or survey data,” said Chuck Hamby, spokesman for Verizon. “Verizon will remain focused on providing the best wireless network and experience possible for our customers, not on accolades.”
The Consumer Report survey found that, generally speaking, the readers were mostly satisfied with T-Mobile’s customer support and value, but AT&T and Verizon both ranked higher than the Magenta Carrier in these areas.
It is worth noting that, last year, the Consumer Report survey ranked T-Mobile and Verizon in a tie, with 69 out of 100, so if anything T-Mobile is simply trending upwards at a faster rate than the Big Red carrier (which still saw a better overall ranking this year).
