There’s something to be said about having a device that can do just about anything someone might need, including taking photos and share them all in a few simple steps.
That’s not to say that dedicated cameras don’t have their place. As Flickr has broken down in their latest Year in Review, the photo-sharing company indicates that while camera phones still hold a healthy lead in their own matrix results, the DSLR is still holding a close second. Breaking it down, Flickr says that camera phones were used 39% of the time to upload photos and videos to the service, while DSLRs were used 31 percent of the time. Point-and-shoot cameras were held off to only 25%, while mirrorless cameras only managed 3%, according to Flickr’s data.
The more intriguing aspect of the results show that the iPhone is still the most popular camera uploading images to Flickr, with a markedly healthy lead over Canon and Nikon. Specifically, the iPhone was responsible for 42% of photos uploaded to Flickr, while Canon (EOS) was responsible for 27% of photos, and Nikon (D) at only 16% of photos.
Flickr breaks down the devices used, showing that the iPhone 6 was the most popular phone used, while the iPhone 5s followed up in second place, and Samsung’s Galaxy S5 held third place. The iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 5 were also part of the list, too. Unsurprisingly, Apple is the most popular “camera” brand on Flickr, while Nikon, Canon, Sony, Samsung, Motorola, and LG are also present.
This is a trend that’s been going on for years, dating back to the iPhone 4 in 2011, and one that will probably not break for some time.
