Edward Snowden believes Apple’s CEO will keep promises on privacy

Edward Snowden, whistleblower and ex-National Security Agency contractor, has spoken with TechCrunch about several topics, and unsurprisingly Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, came up.
Snowden chimed into the conversation via video feed, and stated that he believes Apple’s CEO will stick to his promise regarding security, and that he doesn’t see the company backtracking in the future. He said that, ultimately, it probably “doesn’t matter if he’s being honest or dishonest,” and cautioned that, if Apple does backtrack, people should be prepared to abandon Apple.
When speaking about Cook’s statements at the recent Champions of Freedom awards dinner, where Cook made it a point to point out the differences between Apple’s focus on security and selling hardware, rather than the other company’s focus on selling data. Snowden said that Apple has a “commercial incentive” to stay on its track, and that if Apple were to change things up, and lose its focus on security, than “a much bigger hammer” would fall on Apple. However, Snowden does seem hopeful that Apple and its CEO will stick to their word:
But I would like to think that based on the leadership that Tim Cook has shown on this position so far, he’s spoken very passionately about private issues, that we’re going to see that continue and he’ll keep those promises
How important is Apple’s focus on security to you?
