The iPhone already has an impressive enough camera built into it, but there are several different options out there for attempting to better the experience.
Some of those focus on improving the built-in camera with attached lenses, while other companies aim to connect a camera lens/sensor combination to an iPhone via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, in an attempt to better the overall picture taking experience. Some miss the target altogether, while others do a suitable job for the task at hand. In a quick rundown of the DxO One camera, The Verge suggests this small accessory just might be the hardware many have been waiting for, with one big caveat.
First, the DxO One camera connects to the iPhone via the Lightning port, which means the experience is very fast and responsive, unlike some camera accessory systems that connect to the mobile device through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The physical connection to the bottom of the phone isn’t cumbersome, either, as the camera setup is about the size of a Zippo lighter. Inside that small frame is a 1-inch, 20.2-megapixel sensor, along with a touch-based menu system on the back of the unit for easy navigation. On the top, there’s a two-stage camera shutter button. The report notes that the fixed lens offers a 32mm wide focal range, and that it will open up to f1.8, and can stop down all the way to f11. Add to that, the DxO One camera can snap a photo in as quickly as one-eight thousandth of a second, while the shutter can also stay open for up to a 15 second exposure. The ISO range is 100 to 51,200, and the camera can shoot in RAW or JPG. Video capture happens at 1080p HD at 30fps, or 720p at 120fps.
The DxO One can also shoot in a mode called “SuperRAW,” which takes four back-to-back RAW images and stacks them together. This is meant to whittle away any sensor noise and produce images with better low-light performance.
The report also points out that the included software, which launches in a stand-alone app, is incredibly responsive and easy to use, with slick controls and an easy interface. For those that want access to the manual controls, the report indicates it’s incredibly easy to access and use.
However, the one aforementioned caveat may be the price tag attached to the DxO One. It’s listed at $599 right now, and the company has the iPhone accessory listed right now for pre-order. It will begin shipping in September.
What do you think of the DxO One? Worth the price?
