Nest unveils its $199 security camera called the Cam

On Wednesday, June 17, Nest held an event to announce new things. The pinnacle of that time on stage is a brand new security camera.
On stage, Nest officially unveiled its brand new security camera, which leverages plenty of power it enveloped in its acquisition of Dropcam last year for $555 million. The new camera is simply called the “Cam,” and it’s following quickly in the footsteps of the Dropcam Pro. That includes plenty of shared features, too.
As The Verge notes, the new Cam from Nest can record 1080p HD video at 30fps, while it also offers a 130-degree field of view. It’s worth noting, though, that the Nest Cam’s infrared night vision is rated at 20 feet, while the Dropcam Pro before it was rated at 25 feet. The Cam features a magnet in its stand so that owners can hang it from the refrigerator if they were so inclined. There’s also a standard tripod mount as well, which Nest says will allow owners to put the camera “anywhere you want.” On top of that, Nest Cam owners will be able to stream live video to their iOS 8-based device (and Android 4.0).
To add to the mix, Nest Aware is a brand new cloud-based service that the company also unveiled, which will work well with the new Cam. It will start at $10 per month (which nets owners 10 days of recorded video), and it’s designed to allow owners to store a certain amount of recorded video in the cloud for easy access. At higher monthly price points, owners can upload up to 30 days of recordings, and also save selected clips.
Activity Zones actually let owners select certain regions of a camera’s field of view, and set up notifications for when something happens in that particular area. It’ll let owners ignore other areas of what the camera sees, and let owners see it on their smartphones.
The Nest Cam is listed on Best Buy’s website right now, but as of the time of this publication it says “coming soon,” without a pre-order option live just yet. When it does go live, the Nest Cam will be available for $199.99.Update: The Best Buy landing page for the Nest Cam is now showing a pre-order option, so if you’re interested in checking it out, head through here.
