Oculus Rift won’t support Macs because the GPUs aren’t powerful enough

Oculus Rift
In May of this year, the company behind the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, Oculus VR, announced that it was “suspending” OS X development for its headset.
Oculus VR confirmed at that point that their launch to the public would be Windows-only, which left many Mac owners wanting more when it comes to VR support. Now, just over a month later, Oculus VR’s CEO, Palmer Luckey, has shed even more light on why Macs aren’t being supported by the company, and probably won’t be in the foreseeable future, either.
Speaking with IGN in a live interview during E3 week, Luckey said that the company’s VR headset simply isn’t going to work on “any Macbook that exists or is known to exist in the near future.” Luckey would go on to affirm he’s aware that a lot of people own Apple hardware, especially when it comes to the “laptop space,” but simply put, the GPUs are just not powerful enough to run the recommended specifications for the Oculus Rift:One of the things that we actually announced is that we’re putting Mac support on hold for launch, and focusing on Windows. People have said, ‘Why don’t you support Macs? So many people have Macs.” It’s true. A lot of people have Apple hardware, especially in the laptop space. But the GPUs in those, they’re not even close to what we’re pushing for our recommended spec.”
It’s not all doom and gloom, though, as Luckey confirmed that if Apple decides to put a focus on prioritizing performance, his company would support Macs again. Oculus VR definitely “wants to support it.”
Are you someone that’s excited about virtual reality gaming making a resurgence?
