Motorola unveils the Moto X Style and Moto X Play

Motorola Moto X Play
Every year, Apple launches a new iPhone. In between those releases, though, other companies are busy trying to steal attention away, at least for a little bit.
One of those companies is Motorola, a brand that has been in the mobile industry for quite some time. Now that the M-brand is utilizing Android, the competition has become even louder, with more devices finding their way to market. Now, a pair of new devices is on the way, as revealed by Motorola earlier on July 28. The devices in question are the Moto X Style and Moto X Play, with the former the higher-end of the pair. Both devices are obviously meant for the high-end market, though, even if their price tags are somewhere far below where that market tends to believe they should be.
As such, the Moto X Style and Moto X Play are certainly contending for iPhone owners’ attention, and, most importantly, their hard-earned dollars.
The first of the pair is the Moto X Play (pictured above), which boasts a design that’s similar to the Moto X Style, but there are several key differences. That starts with the 5.5-inch 1080p HD display, and the inclusion of a single front-facing speaker. Within the handset, Motorola has equipped the Moto X Play with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, which is clocked at 1.7GHz.
On the back, there’s a 20MP camera with a f/2.0 aperture, and around the front there’s a 5-megapixel wide-angle front-facing camera. It boasts either 16GB or 32GB of built-in storage, depending on the model, and there’s a microSD card slot for expandable storage when the need arises. It features LTE-connectivity, and the battery is measured in at 3,630mAh. It’s running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box, and while there are Motorola-based applications, like Moto Assist, the overall software is stock Android.
Motorola says the Moto X Play will cost “2/3 of what most flagship Android devices cost,” and the company plans on making it available in 55 different countries this August.

Motorola’s truly flagship handset for 2015 is the Moto X Style, which features a 5.7-inch QHD display, with a pair of front-facing speakers above and below it. Under the hood, there’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, which is clocked at 1.8GHz, and it’s paired with 3GB of RAM. It will come with either 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of built-in storage, and it offers a microSD card slot for expandable storage. The battery is measured in at 3000mAh.
On the back, a 21MP camera with f/2.0 aperture is paired with a dual CCT flash, while on the front there’s a 5MP camera with a flash and a wide-angle lens. It’s running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box, and, just like the Moto X Play, it’s a stock version of the platform with Motorola-based apps thrown in for good measure. It’ll have LTE-connectivity.
As far as pricing goes, the Moto X Style will run for $399 in its Pure Edition format, which will be available in the United States. This Pure Edition will work with all of the major wireless carriers in the United States, including Verizon Wireless, according to Motorola. It will be available in September, and it will be available through Motorola’s website, as well as directly from Best Buy’s and Amazon’s online stores. It will be customizable through Moto Maker as well.
