Apple has confirmed that it is bringing the App Store’s “Alternate Tier” pricing policy to Australia, giving developers the opportunity to offer low-cost apps. The move comes less than a week after Apple bumped up Australia’s App Store pricing in accordance with the latest exchange rate.
In addition to the existing “Tier 1” App Store pricing option, which is now $1.49 after this week’s increase, developers can choose to sell their apps — and any in-app purchases they offer — under “Alternate Tier A” and “Alternate Tier B” rates.
It should be noted, however, that these prices only apply to markets in which Alternate Tier pricing is available; if a developer chooses Tier A or Tier B pricing in Australia, their app will still be offered at Tier 1 rates in countries where Alternate Tier pricing is not available.
International developers who are already using Alternative Tier pricing elsewhere will automatically see their app prices changed to Tier A and Tier B pricing in Australia as well. It’s not totally clear what those are prices are yet, but we’ll update this post once they have been confirmed.
