One feature tied to Chrome for desktop users was the ability to say “OK Google” to prompt a quick search without having to type anything in.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like enough people were using the feature. According to a report published by VentureBeat, Google has opted to remove the feature from its Mac, Windows, and Linus desktop clients for Chrome with the latest release (Chrome 46). The latest release offered plenty of other fixes and improvements, and Google says that by removing “OK Google” from search will actually improve performance and battery life.
For Chrome users on Mac, which tends to be a source of frustration in performance and battery life, this news should be welcomed.
Chromebook users, and those that use Chrome on mobile products, will still be able to say “OK Google” to activate search, though.
Did you use the feature?
