Silicon Valley Business Journal reports that Apple has purchased a 70,000 sq. foot building at 3725 N. First Street in North San Jose for $18.2 million. The building was previously used as a manufacturing plant for a semiconductor company called Maxim Integrated Products.
Ironically, Samsung Semiconductor is among the neighbours of Apple in this area, which had opened its campus in North First Street earlier this year.
Many analysts and experts believe that Apple will be using this building for research and prototyping purposes and not for any chip production purposes due to the limited space.
Below is Apple’s official statement on this matter:
Asked for comment, Apple provided an emailed statement that reads: “As we continue to grow, we’re planning to build R&D facilities and some additional office space in San Jose. The property isn’t far from the future home of our new campus and we’re looking forward to expanding our presence in the Bay Area.”
Apple has been expanding at a rapid pace in and around the Bay Area. It has leased or purchased more than 500,000 sq. foot in various buildings and areas that it plans on converting into a massive campus.
