Apple patent application hints at Apple’s experimentation with OLED wraparound displays

Apple OLED wraparound patent app
Apple’s no stranger to patent applications detailing what technology from the company might look like in the future. Or, at least, experimenting with plenty of ideas.
The latest patent application was surfaced by Apple Insider, and it seems to show that Apple is toying with the idea of implementing OLED wraparound displays. The application is titled, simply enough, “Electronic Device with Wrapped Display,” and directly refers to a “hollow display cover structure.” The example provided in the patent app is OLED for the display technology, and the wraparound display could be protected by sapphire.
As is usual, Apple’s patent app for this particular idea says that it could cover a variety of devices, but the images attached with it don’t showcase any current Apple devices, or even ones that are currently being rumored. Some images show what could be an iPhone or an iPod, though, so it’s possible Apple is considering that for future devices at some point down the road. Apple also includes notes for accelerometer input, voice, touch, and other mainstays of Apple’s mobile devices.
Curved displays are starting to pick up attention, especially from the likes of Samsung which includes an “edge” on some of its devices. Full wraparound display, though, are still a bit of a ways out. Though, it’s not surprising to see Apple filing its patent apps to cover the technology, which is going to be a big factor in the years to come.
