Samsung has rolled out a new ad for Samsung Pay, and like many of the South Korean company’s commercials, it takes a swipe at rival products from Apple. In the 30-second clip, comedian Hannibal Buress takes a trip to the famous Katz’s Deli in New York to highlight Apple Pay’s biggest weakness.
In many ways, Samsung Pay is just like Apple Pay; it lets you pay for good using just your smartphone, so you don’t have to worry about carrying cash, or fumbling around for credit cards in busy stores. But Samsung’s service has one big advantage.
Unlike Apple Pay, which requires special credit card terminals with NFC connectivity, Samsung Pay is compatible with Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) — the same technology that reads traditional credit card strips. That means it’s compatible with all credit card readers, no matter how old.
Samsung is keen to highlight this in the ad below, which shows Buress using a Galaxy Note 5 to pay for a pastrami sandwich in a place that does not support Apple Pay or other mobile payment services.
It’s no surprise that Samsung is promoting this particular Samsung Pay feature, because it’s what really differentiates the service from its rivals. Of course, the big question is, is a better mobile payments service enough to convince you to swap your iPhone for a Samsung Galaxy?
Samsung certainly hopes it is, but we’re not sure many iPhone fans will be so excited.
