Google Play Music introduces ad-supported free tier ahead of Apple Music’s debut

Google Play Music
Google has decided that it will jump into the curated “radio” format for its streaming service, as it announces an ad-supported new tier.
On Tuesday, June 23, Google officially announced a brand new free tier to its Play Music service. With this, anyone can access the new ad-supported radio option, which will feature curated stations. If that sounds familiar, it should, as Apple announced its own Beats 1 radio with curated songs and stations. And, like Apple’s own option, Google says there are “music experts” curating the playlists available within the free tier.
At any moment in your day, Google Play Music has whatever you need music for—from working, to working out, to working it on the dance floor—and gives you curated radio stations to make whatever you’re doing better. Our team of music experts, including the folks who created Songza, crafts each station song by song so you don’t have to. If you’re looking for something specific, you can browse our curated stations by genre, mood, decade or activity, or you can search for your favorite artist, album or song to instantly create a station of similar music.
Apple Music will still boast its own streaming option for non-subscribers with iTunes Radio, and this unveiling of a free tier comes one week before the public launch of Apple Music, which is scheduled for June 30. For those that want to give Google’s Play Music a chance, there’s a 60-day free trial, and after that a $9.99 per month subscription that grants access to the 30 million available songs.
Google’s new radio feature will be available on the web beginning today, and Google says it will be rolling out to the iOS and Android apps in the near future.
