Apple CarPlay may not be getting as much attention as Apple Music lately, but that’s not stopping auto manufacturers from supporting the in-car system anyway.
General Motors has announced that select vehicles from both the GMC and Buick 2016 model year lineup will feature support for Apple CarPlay via the IntelliLink system, which will be built-into many models moving forward. Support for CarPlay will start with early model year vehicles, and for those with an Android-based device, Android Auto will be supported in some 2016 vehicles beginning later in the year.
CarPlay will be supported in the 2016 Buick LaCrosse and Regal. The 2016 GMC Canyon, Sierra and Yukon will also support the in-car systemThe IntelliLink system is designed to automatically bring up CarPlay when an iPhone is connected to the unit via USB, and will give access to features like Messages, Maps, Music, and other first-party apps. Support for third-party apps is also available with the in-cary system, including MLB At Bat, Spotify, Rdio and others. As is par for the course, Siri is supported as well, offering plenty of avenues for hands- and eyes-free control.
Recently, the CEO of General Motors confirmed that 14 Chevrolet models would support built-in CarPlay in the near future. Just yesterday it was revealed that the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 would be the first Chevy vehicle with CarPlay support out of the gate, and it began rolling off the manufacturing line headed for dealerships.
