Metallica, one of the most popular bands of all time, has not always been a huge supporter of music being distributed digitally. But, the band seems to be on board with Apple Music.
At least, that’s how the band’s drummer, Lars Ulrich, feels about the upcoming music streaming service. It hasn’t been a secret that, through the years, Metallica hasn’t been a staunch supporter of digital music distribution, even going as far to wait three years after iTunes’s launch to start distributing their music through the service.
However, while speaking at Cannes Lions, Ulrich has made it perfectly clear that he’s more than excited to be working with Apple, in a sense, and letting Apple Music users stream their albums from the service. He went on to add that he believes Apple is “just about the coolest company in the world,” and that he feels “very safe” with them, as reported by the NY Post:“Speaking at Cannes Lions, drummer Ulrich said he and his Metallica bandmates were excited about the launch of Apple Music’s streaming service. “I think that Apple is just about the coolest company in the world. I am a huge supporter of Apple and all their products, and I have been fortunate enough to meet most of the people there, a lot of the people who make key decisions, and I feel very safe with them,” Ulrich said.“
In 2012, Metallica made it possible for Spotify users to stream the band’s full album lineup, so the fact that the band will have its music available through Apple Music is not all that shocking. It’s worth noting that Ulrich doesn’t seem to have any special interest in Tidal, another music streaming service that has received quite a bit of attention since its recent launch. Ulrich says the band “wasn’t really approached,” but then went on to add that, for the band, it’s been mainly “about Spotify and Apple Music.”
Apple upcoming music streaming service has been on a bit of a rollercoaster recently. While indie labels and artists have been loud in their disagreement with Apple Music three-month free trial period, in which the Cupertino-based company had no plans to pay artists or labels during that time, it took a Tumblr post from artist Taylor Swift for Apple to ultimately change its mind. However, the most recent revelation indicates that while Apple will indeed be paying artists during the aforementioned free trial, it may not be anywhere near the amount it will pay after the trial ends.
Do you plan on using Apple Music?
