Apple has delayed iOS 9’s ‘App Thinning’ feature due to a bug in iCloud’s backup

iOS 9 App Thinning
One of the stand-out features in iOS 9 is “App Thinning,” which will save even more space on iOS devices thanks to thinning down the necessary install.
However, it looks like the feature has hit a bit of a snag. As reported by 9to5Mac, Apple’s feature has been delayed due to an issue with iCloud. Specifically, according to documentation posted to Apple’s Developer Center, the delay is due to an issue with iCloud’s backup of the apps created from iOS 9:
“App slicing is currently unavailable for iOS 9 apps due to an issue affecting iCloud backups created from iOS 9 where some apps from the App Store would only restore to the same model of iOS device.
When a customer downloads your iOS 9 app, they will get the Universal version of your app, rather than the variant specific for their device type. TestFlight will continue to deliver variants for your internal testers. App slicing will be reenabled with a future software update. No action is needed by you at this time.”
With Thinning, apps will be able to be installed faster and even launch more quickly on a device, all the while taking up less space on the device they’re installed on
App Thinning (or Slicing) has been a feature supported by Apple’s Test Flight since the beginning of August, so its delay now, especially after the public launch of iOS 9, is interesting to say the least. As far as functionality goes in Test Flight, it should continue to work just fine. However, developers will not be able to distribute those thinned apps until Apple releases an update to fix the situation.
When that might happen, though, is unknown at this point.
