How to switch from an Android phone to iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus

iPhone lineup
With the launch of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, thousands (or maybe lacs) of people will likely jump over from Android to the beautiful world of iOS. While the switch to iOS is going to be a pleasant experience for most users, the biggest hurdle you are going to face is transferring your data from your old and slow Android device to your brand new iPhone.
To make your life easier, we have written a detailed step-by-step guide on how to transfer your personal data like contacts, messages, calendar entries, photos, and your music library from your old Android device to your brand new iPhone 6s or 6s Plus. The guide below will also work for the iPad and iPod Touch as well, though.

Method 1: Using Move to iOS app

With iOS 9, Apple is making it easier than ever to transfer your important data from an Android device to your brand new iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. Its ‘Move to iOS’ takes away the hassle of transferring your important data like contacts, calendar entries, photos, and more in just a few simple steps. Follow the steps below to know how.
Step 1: Follow the initial setup process on your new iPhone that comes up at first boot. When you reach the ‘Apps & Data’ part, you will notice a new ‘Move Data from Android’ option alongside the usual options of setting up your device as a new iPhone/iPad or restoring an iTunes or iCloud backup. Select it to proceed further.

Step 2: Continue with the setup process when prompted to download the ‘Move to iOS’ app on your Android device. It will then show a 10-digit code on the screen.
Step 3: Now on your Android device, head over to the Google Play Store and download the ‘Move to iOS‘ app from Apple. Start the app, tap on ‘Continue’ and then agree to the terms and conditions. You will get to a screen that is similar to what is shown in the first screenshot below. Simply tap on the ‘Next’ button located at the top-right corner of the display and proceed to enter the code being displayed on your iPhone or iPad.
Step 4: Your iPhone or iPad will then connect to your Android device over a private Wi-Fi network. This process can take up to a minute or two though. Once done, the Move to iOS app on your Android device will show the data that you can successfully transfer to your new iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus.
Step 5: Select the data that you would like to transfer and tap ‘Next’ to start the transfer process. You can transfer contacts, messages, photos, videos, bookmarks, Google accounts, and calendar entries for now. However, the type of data you can transfer will vary depending on the Android device you have.
Depending on the size of the data, the whole process can take up to a few minutes to complete.
Step 6: Once the transfer process is complete, you will be able to continue further setting up your new iPhone.
As Apple points out at the end of the transfer process in its Move to iOS app on Android, you can drop off your old Android device to any Apple Store to recycle them for free.

Method 2: Via Synchronisation

Contacts & Calendar entries

One of the advantages of using an Android device, is that your contacts and calendar entries are always synced to the cloud through Google Contacts. This makes transferring your them to your new iPhone significantly easier.
Add Google account to iPhone
Step 1: On your iPhone (or iPad), head over to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Add Account -> Google and proceed to sign in with your Google account credentials.
Step 2: Once you are done logging in, you will get an option to toggle syncing on or off for your contacts, calendar, mails, and notes. Depending on your choice, select the appropriate option to sync your contacts and calendar entries to your brand new iOS device.

Photos

While there is a tedious way of transferring photos from your old Android device to your new iPhone, I will recommend you to simply upload them to Google Photos through your Android device. This way, you will always have access to your photos, including your iPhone.
To make sure that all your photos are backed up to Google Photos from your old Android device, open the Google Photos app on it and swipe from the left edge of the screen to bring up the navigation drawer. Then tap on Settings -> Backup & sync and make sure that syncing is on. Photos that have been backed up to the cloud will not show the syncing icon.
You can then view these photos on your iPhone (or any other iOS device) by downloading the Google Photos app from the App Store and signing in to it using the same Google account that you had used on your Android device.
In case, you still want to save some photos to the local storage of your iPhone 6s, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Transfer the photos from your Android device to your PC and store them inside a new folder on your desktop.
Step 2: Connect your new iPhone to your PC and open up iTunes. Switch over to the ‘Photos’ tab from the Settings menu of your device.

Step 3: Enable the ‘Sync Photos’ option and then select the folder located on your desktop where you had transferred all the photos from your old Android device. Then, press the ‘Apply’ button for all the changes to be applied.

Music

With Apple Music around, it is unlikely that you will want to transfer your music library over to your new iPhone or iPad. In case, you are still want to transfer over your music library, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Your entire music collection should already be added to iTunes. If not, you can go to File and select the ‘Add to Library’ option and then add your entire music collection to iTunes.
Step 2: Then proceed to connect the iPhone to your PC and switch over to the ‘Music’ tab from their Settings menu in iTunes.

Step 3: Enable the ‘Sync Music’ option and then depending on your choice, you will be able to sync your entire library to your new new iPhone or just some selected playlists or artists.

App Data & Messages

If you are looking to transfer over your WhatsApp chat history or data from any other application, then you are going to be disappointed. Due to the huge underlying differences between Android and iOS, it is not possible to transfer app data between the two OSes. This means that you will end up losing your progress in games that you were playing on your Android device, and will have to re-login in all apps and services on your iPhone again.

Now that you have successfully transferred all your important data from your old Android device to your brand new iPhone, it is time for you to check out our list of some of the must-have apps for them.
