iPhone 6s camerasPreorders for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus start at 12:01 AM PT on September 12, with in-store sales to begin on September 25th. If you intend on buying the new iPhone, then you need to your research and do it fast. Below is a condensed version of our buyers guide to help you make the best decisions on selling your old phone and buying a new one.

Should you upgrade to the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus?

The first question you need to ask yourself is whether you even need to upgrade to the iPhone 6s or 6s Plus. If you already own the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, there’s little reason to upgrade, but if you still are rocking an iPhone 4s, then I hope you have that credit card ready. The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus do have a handful of compelling features, including a faster A9 processor, a 12-megapixel camera, a new 3D Touch interface, always-on Siri integration and more. And with carrier offering payment plans with zero down, there’s little reason not to upgrade if you are eligible.

Once you’ve decided to upgrade, you then need to decide which phone will you buy. Will you purchase the smaller 4.7-inch iPhone 6s or, the larger 5.5-icnh iPhone 6s Plus? The iPhone 6s has a few additional features such as optical image stabilization and improved landscape mode, that may entice people to choose the larger phone. Choose wisely as the larger phone may be beautiful to use for activities like watching movies and navigating, but the larger form factor makes it difficult to carry around. The iPhone 6s provides a nice balance between size and pocket-ability — it’s big enough to browse website, yet small enough that you can text with one hand and stow the phone in your pocket with ease.

16GB, 64GB or 128GB?

After carrier, coverage, and cost, capacity is the next big question you must answer. Given the 4K capabilities of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, I would advise most consumers to avoid the 16GB model. Spend the extra $100 to get the 64GB model For the price of a night on the town, you’ll quadruple your storage space and never have to worry about running out of space. If you are a power user with a large media collection, an offline user who wants everything on their phone or a navigation pro with maps galore, then you should pony up another $100 ad get the 128GB model. You likely won’t fill the device, but you will have fun trying.

Which color iPhone 6s to buy?

Just when you got used to three color options — gold, silver and space gray. Apple has to go and mix things up again by adding a fourth color — rose gold. But the gold and rose gold if you want to stand out from the crowd. Stick with black if you enjoy gaming and media as the black frame makes graphical content look awesome. If you want to hide scratches and keep you iPhone light and airy, then pick silver. If you are not sure, grab the color option that is available when you are ready to purchase and slap a case on it.

Which iPhone 6s Insurance to choose?

AppleCare+ costs $129 for two years of coverage and provides the best service, allowing you to walk into a store with a broken iPhone and walk out with one that has been repaired or replaced for $99. AppleCare is an excellent option, but it does not cover loss or theft. If you are concerned about losing your phone or having it stolen, then go with the carrier insurance. It may be more expensive and have a higher deductible, but you will be happy to pay only $200 to get a new phone when your old phone is sleeping with the fishes after an unfortunate fall from a boat. SquareTrade is another excellent option, but it requires you to send in your device for repair. This mail-in process takes about a week, so you will need to go without a phone or have a backup. Retailers, such as Best Buy, also offer warranty service, but you usually have to ship the device off to be repaired and the pricing on these retail plans is often high.
AT&T vs. Verizon vs. Sprint vs. T-Mobile

Which Carrier to choose?

The US has four major carriers who will be accepting pre-orders and carrying the phone at launch. Verizon has the best coverage, blanketing the nation in 4G LTE, but it is also the most expensive. . AT&T comes next with a nationwide coverage map that hits the major cities, their suburbs and select rural areas. Once you stray off his beaten path, only Verizon gives you the chance of getting a signal. Sprint and T-Mobile follow with coverage maps that focus on the major cities and highways in the US. T-Mobile wins the award with the most improved coverage with plans to expand exponentially through the rest of 2015. When you compare 4G service, T-Mobile also is the fastest carrier with download speeds that beat out competitors. Unlike Verizon, which has 4G on almost its entire network, T-Mobile’s 4G may be hard to find once you leave the city.
Decide what is important to you when you use you phone. If you want coverage everywhere, then stick with Verizon. If you want fast speeds in the city, then go with T-Mobile. If you stay mostly in populated areas and want affordable reliability, then consider AT&T. If you don’t need rural coverage and prefer a leasing option for your phone, then consider Sprint.

Where to sell your current iPhone?

The best place to sell your phone is eBay as long as you don’t mind the hassle of shipping a phone and dealing with the occasional scammer. You’ll get top value for your phone at eBay with Craigslist a close second. With Craigslist, you don’t have to pay any fees. Just meet the buyer, exchange the device for cash and go on your way. Just be careful to conduct transactions in a public place and bring a friend. Lastly, you can trade-in your phone at retailers and services such as Gazelle, Best Buy, Apple or Amazon. You won’t get the best price on your phone, but it will be an easy transaction. Just secure your price, send in the phone (or go to a retail store) and wait for your cash or gift cards to arrive.
