Apple is signing up dozens of publishers “at a rapid clip” as it prepares its new News app for the upcoming launch in iOS 9 this month. More than 50 major publications are said to be onboard already, helping Apple compete with the likes of Flipboard and Google News.
“This week, Apple announced deals with 18 major media companies representing over 50 publications as contributors to Apple News,” reports MediaPost. Those publications and contributors include Condé Nast, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, CNN, and others.
Apple reportedly offered “generous terms” to put these deals in place, and it will allow all publishers to sell ads on the News platform and keep 100 percent of the revenue. Those who don’t sell all of their ad inventory can use Apple’s iAds and keep 70 percent of the revenue.
To submit content to the News platform, publishers integrate Apple’s API into their own content management systems, MediaPost adds. This allows them to publish stories directly to News, and use special formatting tools that allow them to make content more engaging.
Apple is hoping News will be able to compete with other big news sources on mobile, including Flipboard, Google News, andFacebook’s new Instant Articles platform. The new app will be available to all iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners inside iOS 9.
iOS 9 is expected to make its public debut on September 16, according to recent rumors. However, Apple will confirm its release date tomorrow during its big keynote.
