The new Apple TV has already begun shipping for some, and it’s expected to go on sale in Apple retail stores beginning October 30. Building up buzz for the new set-top box is Apple’s Eddy Cue talking with CNN’s Brian Stelter.
The interview is a quick one, with Cue sitting down with Stelter and answering a few questions about the box itself, as well as what Apple sees for the future of television and how Apple TV plays a role in that. Cue, for his part, talks up the strengths of the set-top box, noting that the presence of apps on the device is a huge boost, just as it was for smartphones all those years ago, and that it provides the option for developers to create new and exciting things.
Cue also talks about the fact that, even if there still needs to be a cable subscription necessary for some apps, or to access the full content of what an app can provide, the experience of using that app on the Apple TV is still better than what’s available via that cable subscription. Cue’s example was CNNgo, where viewers can actually interact with the app, which could lead to more exciting programming down the road through user feedback that the news organization pays attention to. Meanwhile, via standard cable, people just watch.
Interestingly enough, Cue also deftly avoids any suggestions or hints about an Apple streaming TV service. On top of that, at the end of the interview, Stelter asks Cue if there’s any truth to the rumors that Apple is working on its own original video programming, similar to what Hulu and Netflix and Amazon are doing, but Cue simply states Apple is happy working with its partners and it will continue to work on technology:
“We love working with our partners. We’re great at technology, and they’re great at creating content, and we think that’s a great partnership to have.”
Cue also showed off the Apple TV, too, going through its features and more.
