For Facebook users, the News Feed has probably seen an influx of videos over the last several months. And that’s a trend Facebook wants to see more of.
According to a public blog post the social networking giant published on October 13, Facebook has plans to rollout even broader video experiences in the future, with at least some of that focus being put on iPhone users right now. There are a variety of different routes and options that Facebook is currently considering, or planning in varying levels of development.
That includes a feed that is entirely dedicated to videos. That means that someone could select a “Video” option within the app, and be taken to a feed that is only videos, whether that’s from their friends and family, Pages they follow, or even put together from Moments that showcase live video feeds from some (famous) Facebook users.
This is something that Facebook is currently testing with a small number of Facebook for iPhone users, so this rollout is quite limited:
“Lastly, we’ll be testing a dedicated place on Facebook for people to go when they exclusively want to watch video—whether that’s videos they’ve saved for later, or videos from friends, Pages they follow, and other video publishers on Facebook. This new videos section helps people discover, watch and share videos on Facebook that are relevant to them. It can be accessed by tapping a “Videos” icon at the bottom of the Facebook app on iPhone or in the “Favorites” section on the left-hand side of News Feed on the web.”
Another new option is “Suggested Videos,” which is apparently seeing the light of day on more iPhone user’s feeds. With this, a select number of additional videos will be offered after someone watches an initial video that is in their News Feed. Facebook says that it has already seen an increase in video watching with this option, so it looks like this could be sticking around:
“Suggested videos is one of the features we’ve been testing on iPhone, making it easy to discover multiple related videos in a row after you tap on a video from News Feed. While we’re still in the early days of testing, we’re pleased with initial results, which show that people who have suggested videos are discovering and watching more new videos. We’ve now rolled out suggested videos to most people on iPhone globally, and are starting to test ads within the experience. We are also starting to test this on the web, and plan to test on Android phones in the coming months.”
And yes, Facebook is going to test ads within that Suggested Videos experience.
One additional option that Facebook is currently considering is focused on multitasking, so the user can still scroll through their News Feed, but keep watching those videos in a “floating screen.”
“In addition to helping people find more videos they may be interested in, we know people sometimes want to multitask while they watch videos. To make this possible, we’re testing a way for people to watch a video in a floating screen while simultaneously multitasking on Facebook.”
And, finally, Facebook is also considering a way for users to save a video for later.
What do you think of the ideas?
