Encryption is a big deal these days, especially for messaging applications. One of the most popular ones on the market, Line, has finally added its own next-layer of security for its users.
Line, the Japan-based company that has one of the most popular mobile/desktop messaging apps in the world, has just announced a new feature called “Letter Sealing.” With this, there is now end-to-end encryption present on its mobile and desktop apps, including for Windows and Apple’s Mac OS X. It is available for iOS and Android users as well.
It’s available for users using Line version 5.3.0 or later.
According to Line’s official announcement, the chat content will now be scrambled via a key that is present only on the device, which is specifically not stored on a centralized server. Due to this, Line says that it is “technically impossible” for chat content to be revealed to the chat server or a third-party service.
Important to note is that for an Android user that has only one Android-based device connected to the Line user’s account, the feature will be turned on automatically. For Android users with multiple devices, or iOS users, you’ll need to head into the Settings of the app and turn Letter Sealing on manually (More > Settings > Chats & Voice Calls > Letter Sealing, to enable Letter Sealing feature). Line says that it plans on turning the feature on by default at some point in the future.
Also, for the encryption to work, both parties in the conversation need to have the feature turned on.
The new encryption should be available now. What do you think of this new layer of security?
Line is available for free. A link to download the app is available below.
