Mozilla had previously said that it didn’t plan to launch its Firefox browser for iOS as Apple does not allow third-party developers to use their own web engine, and hence Mozilla didn’t “feel like it could build the browser it wants” on Apple’s platform.
Prior to iOS 8, third-party browsers also couldn’t use the Nitro Javascript engine, which meant that they were not as fast as mobile Safari. Apple has however addressed this issue in iOS 8, as it includes improvements such as increased JavaScript performance via WebKit’s super-fast JIT. You also can’t set a third-party browser as the default browser in iOS. But with a new CEO on board, Mozilla changed its stance and announced plans to launch Firefox for iOS in December 2014.
Firefox for iOS is certainly great for users who use the browser on their computer as features like Firefox account gives them seamless access to their history, bookmarks, open tabs. It remains to be seen it will be able to convince other users from Safari or other third-party browsers.
You can download Firefox browser for iOS using the direct iTunes link below, however please note that it requires iOS 8.2 or later.
