The iPad Pro’s Lightning port supports USB 3.0 transfer speeds, new adapters are forthcoming

The Verge's iPad Pro review
The Lightning port on the iPad Pro is apparently not as standard as many had originally believed.
As initially revealed in the teardown the iPad Pro recently received from the crew at iFixit, the 12.9-inch tablet features a Fesco Logic FL1100 4-port USB 3.0 host controller, which immediately suggested that the iPad Pro could, at the very least, support USB 3.0 transfer speeds. Now, based on that teardown and with independent reports from two different sources, it looks like that’s been the plan all along.
CNET recently reviewed Apple’s latest iPad family member, and in that review, as noted by MacRumors, Scott Stein says that Apple independently confirmed to him that the company has plans for “USB 3-level speeds with forthcoming adapters.” Moreover, photographer Jeff Carlson has also recently confirmed that an unnamed source said that adapters with USB 3.0 transfer speed support are indeed coming down the pipe.
The upgrade to USB 3.0 transfer speed support is notable because of the uptick in speeds themselves. Specifically, the standard Lightning port can only feature a maximum transfer speed of up to 35MB/s, or roughly USB 2.0 transfer speeds. However, with USB 3.0 support, those speeds can be upgraded to 60MB/s.
There are still unanswered questions. Specifically, whether or not Apple will introduced USB 3.0-supported Lightning cables for the iPad Pro to connect to a computer and transfer files. Also, when these adapters will see the light of day is unknown.
Still, a nice bonus for the iPad Pro, especially for those that plan on doing a lot of transfers over the Lightning cable.
