A report from the New York Post claims that Apple’s talks with the four major broadcasting services in the United States for its streaming TV service have rapidly gained momentum.
According to one of the sources of the website, the “platform is ready and it rocks.”
The Cupertino company discussions with ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox was mainly over offering local live TV streaming on any Apple device on its upcoming streaming TV service.
To offer local TV streaming services on its upcoming platform though, Apple would have had to get the required rights from all local TV operators, since they are run by affiliates and not by broadcasters directly. However, Tim Cook asked the broadcasters to get the rights for Apple, and they did exactly that. The major broadcasters are very close to sealing their negotiations with local TV channels on behalf of Apple.
The broadcasters were able to lure in local networks by promising them added revenue that will be produced if they offer their channel on Apple’s streaming platform.
“Apple has a lot of reach and this is a good opportunity,” said one network source.
The report also claims that Disney and CBS will be among the first to sign the deal and get Apple’s “so-called skinny bundle off the ground.”
Apple was initially expected to unveil a new Apple TV at WWDC this year, along with a dedicated streaming platform, its own App Store, and more. However, since the company could finalise the deal with broadcasters, it ended up postponing the official unveiling of the device to later this year.
