Along with the release of iOS 9 on Wednesday, Apple also released its first Android app: Move to iOS.
As it turns out though, the app is just a rebranded third party app, Copy My Data, from Media Mushroom. The company specialises in transferring your important data between the two platforms easily. Besides Copy My Data, Media Mushroom offers another similar app called Device Switch.
Apple has essentially rebranded the app, added its UI assets and terms and conditions, and removed assets from Media Mushroom.
The two applications share a vast majority of code and functionality. In fact, all of the com.mediamushroom.copymydata strings were left inside Apple’s rebranded version. Essentially, the only differences between the two apps are Apple’s artwork being added, the inclusion of Apple’s licensing agreements, and Media Mushroom’s UI elements being removed. That’s really it.
There have been no reports of Apple purchasing Media Mushroom, so it is likely that Apple entered into a licensing agreement with the company.
Since its launch on Wednesday on the Google Play Store, the Move to iOS App has been given 1-star rating by more than 12,000+ Android users and has received negative feedback for not following Google’s Material Design guidelines.
