One of the major selling points of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus is something called 3D Touch, and for anyone that’s been curious whether or not screen protectors will work with the new devices, there’s finally an answer.
As a refresher, 3D Touch works by way of the specialized capacitive sensors that are embedded within the backlight of the display. Those sensors are designed to perceive microscopic changes in the distance between that backlight and the glass cover. All of that, working with signals that are combined from the accelerometer and the touch sensor, as it applies to finger pressure.
So, with all of that information, and just the sheer fact that Apple is including new technology in the display of its upcoming smartphones, there was some confusion as to whether or not a screen protector might mess things up. Thankfully, thanks to marketing chief Phil Schiller by way of an email sent to 3D Techtronics, screen protectors will work.
But there’s a catch.
The screen protector manufacturers need to follow the guidelines set in place by Apple will work with the 3D Touch technology:
“Yes. screen overlays that follow our guidelines will continue to work with 3D Touch.”
So, that means that a screen protector needs to be electrically conductive to start, and it cannot exceed 0.3mm in thickness, and there cannot be any air gaps between the protector and the touchscreen itself.
Essentially, it sounds like anyone that wants to get a screen protector should probably wait for manufacturers to get their protectors to fit Apple’s guidelines for the newest smartphones. But, at least they work.
