In his latest note issued to investors, analyst Gene Munster states that there is a 50-50 chance that Apple might launch a streaming TV service to go along with the new Apple TV.
The analyst says that the new video content service from Apple is a “wildcard” that might or might not be unveiled at its rumored September 9 event next month. Whenever Apple does end up launching its video content service though, it is likely feature channels from all the major networks and cable providers like ESPN, AMC, TNT, and TBS.
As for the Apple TV itself, Munster says that the device is long overdue for a hardware refresh. Various reports and rumors from the beginning of this year have claimed that Apple will be refreshing the Apple TV with faster internals this year, which will be accompanied with a dedicated App Store, Siri support, and a new touchpad based remote.
Apple was initially expected to unveil the new Apple TV at its ‘Spring Forward’ event held in March this year, but instead, it ended up announcing a price cut for the current generation Apple TV.
Munster believes that while the new Apple TV will definitely help in improving the sales of the device, it will not greatly benefit Apple’s bottom line.
