AT&T will not throttle speeds of its grandfathered unlimited data users until they cross 22GB of usage

AT&T has silently updated its support documents with its new policy on throttling users who are on its grandfathered unlimited data plan.
Up until now, AT&T started throttling users on its grandfathered data plan after their usage crossed 5GB and they were in a congested area. Under the new policy though, AT&T will only throttle users on its unlimited plan after they have used more than 22GB of data in a single billing cycle and are in a congested area. That is an increase of nearly 4.5x times, which should be more than enough to suffice almost all heavy smartphone users. If a user is not in a congested area and his or her usage has already crossed 22GB, their data speeds will not be throttled.
As you would expect, these network management practices have continued to evolve over time to benefit our customers and take advantage of the billions we have spent to expand and augment our networks. As a result of this evolution, we recently revised our practices such that Unlimited Data Plan smartphone customers can now use 22GB of high-speed data during a billing period before becoming subject to network management practices that might result in reduced data speeds and increased latency.
Considering that AT&T has long been criticised by many for its throttling policies, this news should come as a welcome change, especially for those who are still on the carrier’s grandfathered unlimited data plan.
