With iOS 9, Apple is adding some new multitasking features to the iPad that will make it possible to run two apps side-by-side called Split View. When combined with other new ways to multitask, iOS 9 makes the iPad a great productivity tool.
You can read more about all the new multitasking features — Split View, Slide Over, and Picture-in-Picture — in iOS 9 here. Sadly, not all iPads will be getting the new multitasking features due to RAM and processing power limitations.
Split View
Probably the best multitasking related feature in iOS 9 — the ability to run two apps side-by-side and seamlessly transfer content between them — is limited only to the iPad Air 2. It goes without saying that the iPad Pro and iPad mini 4 will also support it.
The iPad Air 2 was Apple’s most powerful device released last year. It features a tri-core A8X processor and 2GB of RAM, which give it enough grunt to run two apps side-by-side.
Slide Over
Slide Over in iOS 9 makes it possible to run an app as an overlay on top of an already existing app. Unlike Split View, Slide Over is available for a wider range of iPads.
- iPad Pro
- iPad Air 2
- iPad Air
- iPad mini 4
- iPad mini 3
- iPad mini 2
Picture-in-Picture
Picture-in-Picture allows you to view a video in windowed mode while using other applications. For example, you can do a FaceTime video call in a mini-window mode, without hampering your browsing session in Safari. This feature is available on the following iPads:
- iPad Pro
- iPad Air 2
- iPad Air
- iPad mini 4
- iPad mini 3
- iPad mini 2
In a nutshell, if you own an iPad 2-4 or the original iPad mini, you won’t be able to use the new multitasking features in iOS 9.
