With just a few hours to go for the iOS 9 release, one of the most frequently asked question that we were getting from readers who have either installed iOS 9 GM or iOS 9 public beta is whether they will get an OTA update to install iOS 9 that will be released today. So let me answer that question.
iOS 9 GM/iOS 9 beta users
Apple seeded iOS 9 GM or Golden Master with build number 13A340 to its developers last week. Golden Master as you may know, is the final build of iOS 9 before the software is publicly released. Developers use it to submit their iOS 9 compatible apps to the App Store.
It is very likely that today’s release will have the same build number as iOS 9 GM. Unless Apple has identified a critical bug and have to fix it before releasing it to the public.
If the build number of iOS 9 public release is different then you will get an OTA update. However, if the build number of iOS 9 that is released to the public is 13A340, the same as iOS 9 GM, then you don’t have to do anything. You essentially have the same software installed on your iOS device that everyone will get to install today.
If you’re still on iOS 9 beta 5 or lower then you’ll also get the OTA update when iOS 9 is released today.
iOS 9 Public beta users
In case of public beta users, iOS 9 public beta 3 with build number 13A4325c was the final public beta that was released to testers of Apple’s iOS beta program. It was released in August. If you’ve installed the public beta then you’ll get an OTA update to install iOS 9 when it is released later today.
However, it is important to note that Apple has also seeded iOS 9.1 beta to both developers and beta testers. So alternatively, you can install iOS 9.1 directly. If you plan to install or have already installed iOS 9.1 beta, then you won’t get an OTA for today’s release.
Jailbreakers
If you’ve jailbroken your iOS device, then you won’t be able to install the OTA update for iOS 9. You will get the “Checking for Update..” message when you go to General > Software Update in Settings. Most modern jailbreak tools disable OTA updates so that you don’t accidentally install it. You will have to update your iOS device to iOS 9 using iTunes by plugging it to your computer if you want to install it. Please remember that you will end up losing the jailbreak and your favorite jailbreak tweaks when you install iOS 9.

I hope this answers your questions. Please let me know if you’ve any other questions.
