Apple reported during its earnings call on Tuesday that a combined total of 57.9 million iPhones and iPads were sold in Q3 2015, which means that for the first time in the history of the iOS platform, it is matching sales of all Windows PCs put together.
Despite seeing its stock plummet in the hours after its call, Apple reported another record quarter with incredibly strong numbers. Its iPhone business alone saw a whopping 47 million units sold during the three-month period, while the iPad business achieved 10.9 million units sold.
As a result, iOS devices are now matching sales of Windows PCs — as visualized in the graph above from Benedict Evans of Andreessen Horowitz — despite bring a significantly smaller platform.Sales of Windows PCs peaked in early 2012, and they’ve been steadily falling ever since. They are now at roughly the same figure as that of June 2008. iOS devices, on the other hand, have continued to see significant growth every year since the platform was introduced.
Evans notes, however, that Android is still way out in front. Google’s platform overtook Windows PC sales back in March 2012, and it seems highly unlikely at this point that any other operating system will be catching up with it anytime soon.
