Report: Apple to drop 16GB iPhone option, iPhone 6s to start with 32GB storage option

Apple will finally drop the 16GB iPhone option and give the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus a minimum of 32GB of storage, according to a new report. The full lineup is expected to include 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB devices — but you shouldn’t get your hopes up too much just yet.
The somewhat questionable information comes from Chinese blog MIC Gadgetwhich cites “insiders” at Foxconn who claim packaging for a 16GB iPhone 6s simply does not exist.
“We can’t tell you from what Foxconn’s department we received information,” reads the report, “but we can only say that the packaging of the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus don’t have sticker with “16GB capacity”, but 32, 64, 128.”
iPhone users have been calling for Apple to ditch the 16GB storage option for years. In an age where HD photos and videos are contained on all of our devices, and apps and games are becoming bigger and bigger, 16GB just isn’t enough for the vast majority of smartphone users.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard the 16GB iPhone will be killed off this year, either; a May report from market intelligence firm TrendForce also promised that 32GB of storage would be the minimum for Apple’s next-generation devices. But we shouldn’t get too excited for now.
In an interview last month, Apple’s Phil Schiller justified 16GB iPhones by pointing to the rise in cloud-based storage products such as iCloud, and suggested that the company wasn’t about to give up on the 16GB option just yet.
What’s more, we’ve already seen leaked iPhone 6s logic board with 16GB storage chips attached.
It could be that Apple will continue to offer a 16GB iPhone at a more affordable price, but reintroduce the 32GB option as well — expanding the lineup to four models — and making it only slightly more expensive. Or it could be that MIC Gadget’s information is simply incorrect.
It seems unlikely Apple would offer four storage options, but that’s exactly what it’s doing with the new iPod touch. We won’t rule anything out at this point, then — especially not the return of a 16GB iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.
